Blackpool Airport welcomes a new Managing Director to the team who will lead the airport into a new and exciting chapter in its history.
Steve Peters joins the team from a previous role as Commercial Director-Asia Pacific and Board member for an aviation MRO company at their UK head office.
Originally from New Zealand, Steve was surrounded by aviation throughout his childhood with many members of his family working as cabin crew or pilots for Air New Zealand. This allowed him an early opportunity to climb aboard the early B737-200s and marvel at all the switches and dials.
His career break into aviation came in the UK in the early nineties with a corporate aircraft management company, where he was responsible for aircraft sales and acquisitions. His extensive experience also includes aircraft management, remarketing and consultancy work, working with eminent companies such as Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi Corporation in Tokyo, and establishing a flight simulator company back in New Zealand which, after over 500 hours sim flying time, Steve admits he still can’t fly his way out of a paper bag in real life!
Steve also spent time as GM-Commercial for a general aviation aircraft manufacturer where he learnt the processes, procedures and regulatory requirements involved turning 2,500 individual parts into an eight seat aircraft.
Steve said, “The role at Blackpool Airport appeals on multiple fronts, not least the opportunity to work with the airport and Enterprise Zone teams to help realise aviation growth opportunities in aircraft operations and support. The first steps will be to fully understand the challenges and potential of the airport as a business, with a view to quickly establishing strategy around how the airport can grow over the next three to five years and developing the plans and timelines to deliver on that strategy.
“My partner and I are excited about the relocation and can’t wait to get settled on the Fylde Coast to start exploring the surrounding area and attractions, the local national parks and coastal walks, which
will be chosen by ‘The Gurls’, our two Border Collies. Taking in the atmosphere at Blackpool FC at Bloomfield Road is a must, as well as enjoying the arts and theatre, restaurants and village pubs in the area.”
Cllr Gillian Campbell, Chair of BOAL (Blackpool Airport Operations Ltd) said, “After successfully transferring the CAA licences back under the control of the airport in November last year, the airport has been eagerly anticipating Steve’s appointment as the final piece of the puzzle to kick start the airport’s new independent journey, and we are delighted to welcome Steve to the team. We chose Steve for the position as we believe he has the right skills, experience and enthusiasm to lead the airport towards a brighter, more profitable, sustainable future as an important strategic transport hub for Lancashire.”

Background Information - Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone
- Enterprise Zones are part of the Government’s wider Industrial Strategy to support businesses and enable local economic growth. Blackpool Airport was awarded enterprise status in 2016 until 2041.
- The Enterprise Zone is a 144 hectare site that includes Blackpool Airport, Blackpool Retail Park, Blackpool Business Park and surrounding land up to the border of Common Edge Road.
- The 144 hectare site is much larger than many of the other UK enterprise zones and straddles the boundary between the Borough of Fylde (55%) and Blackpool (45%). Much of the site sits within designated greenbelt and has multiple stakeholders, up to 20 freehold and long leasehold property interests and over 200 occupiers.
- Easy to get to from Jct 4 of the M55 motorway (10 minute drive), Blackpool South train station (5 minute walk)
- The purpose of the Enterprise Zone status is to:
- create jobs and long term sustainable growth
- unlock development sites
- build new roads, utilities and supporting housing and schools
- attract new business to the area
- The Enterprise Zone offers local businesses financial help to get started. By moving to the Enterprise Zone businesses can benefit from Enhanced Capital Allowances if a company decides to design and build their own building
- All the money collected through the new business rates generated on the EZ, over the 25 year lifespan, is kept by Blackpool Council as the accountable body (no cut given back to government) to re-invest in local economic growth. In addition, the Government is working actively with Enterprise Zones to help to unblock any barriers to delivery, such as support with transport infrastructure, environmental issues and providing advice on marketing zones to international investors.
In order to provide the essential infrastructure i.e. roads, water, gas and electricity to the site, up front to create the opportunities for growth, Blackpool Council has made a significant decision to allocate £28.8m against future growth over the first three years and kick start plans to develop the EZ making the opportunities available for new buildings and investment for the future
